there's a bank in melbourne called bendigo - i think it's a town aswell - and it reminds me of the most wonderful children's book/poem we had when we were little. the poem is called 'the wendigo' and a garbled version of it has been annoyingly going round in my head for days. so today i looked it up, and sure enough the internet didn't fail me....

the wendigo, the wendigo!
Its eyes are ice and indigo!
Its blood is rank and yellowish!
Its voice is hoarse and bellowish!
Its tentacles are slithery,
and scummy, slimy, leathery!
its lips are hungry blubbery,
and smacky, sucky, rubbery!

the wendigo, the wendigo!
i saw it just a friend ago!
last night it lurked in canada,
tonight, on your veranada!
as you are lolling hammockwise,
it contemplates you stomachwise.
you loll,
it contemplates,
it lollops,
the rest is merely gulps and gollops!

(from "custard and company", poems by ogden nash)

the worst thing has happened - i've taken a job in a place without either a coffee machine of any way of making fresh coffee. actually, what's even worse is i'm drinking the instant stuff they provide. [shudder]. thank god i'm only working here for three months. though maybe if i was here longer i'd start on another coffee machine campaign - it only took about three months to get one on the floor i was working on in my last job. and then only another month 'til it was plumbed in!

oops - there goes my blog every day resolution. it's just that i'm having to work when i'm at work. wierd i know. it's not like i'm being very productive though. i've been stuck on one tiny thing for the past two days. [anyone know how to connect to a database using sybase's tds protocol and jdbc??]

and i'm not getting up to much of any interest outside work either - i'm not used to this commuting lark - i had a seven minute walk from my house to work in my last job - and the early mornings are killing me too - so now by the time i get home i'm fit for bed.

though i'm making a very special effort tonight and going to a table quiz. ah, the joys of a hectic social life!!

look at that - two blogs in one day! so i really was serious about that more frequent blogging thing. well i never.

and "what's that you say about having a job?", i hear you ask. well, i just couldn't wait to get back to work y'know! or, as actually happenned, it was lined up for me by a very nice ex-colleague of mine, and all i had to do was walk into it.

and aonghus and me got ourselves a cozy [read tiny] studio apartment right in central melbourne. all in the space of two weeks. we have been busy. though aonghus is currently playing house husband, but he's applying to jobs as we speak [well, he'd better be or i'll cut off his allowance].

i know that blogs of late have been short and intermittent, but i was unwilling to feed dollars [hey i'm in australia now] into the overpriced internet cafes. however within a week of arriving in melbourne, i somehow managed to get myself a job [yes - a job! yay!!] and what with being back infront of a pc for eight hours a day, frequent blogging will henceforth resume [though only during lunchbreaks and after work of course].

after a couple of chilly days, my first melbourne priority was to buy a coat, which i successfully managed [it's deliciously warm and has a lovely red lining]. so now i'm thinking up any excuse to go walking in the cold. aonghus, who only has his light jacket isn't so keen!!

the first tourist thing we did in melbourne of course, was to find the highest object and go to it's top [as is obligatory in all cities one visits i hear]. it wasn't as high as the one in kuala lumpur, but better i think - as it's closer to stuff you can make out more detail. ironic really that the higher one's aren't necessarily the more impressive. i suppose it depends a lot on the surrounding scenery too.

any suggestions for somewhat less touristy [but entertaining] things to do in melbourne are more than welcome.

i should be mailing everyone now instead of blogging [or if you don't like the term 'blogging', howabout 'weblogging' or 'writing in my weblog'? though that is a lot more cumbersome...] coz i owe lots of people emails. and i should espeically do it now as we're back in bangkok where internet access is half a baht [about a penny] per minute, and tomorrow we leave south east asia once and for all for melbourne where i'm sure internetting will be a lot more expensive. but we're rushing around trying to fit in all the last thai sights and experiences before we go so i don't have time to take advantage of the cheap cheap rates and i'll just have to apologise here to all the people i should be emailing, and promise i'll get through to yiz soon!

aparantly a full moon party can't be 'ubiquitous'.

i'm pretty sure it was though! definitely some word that's hard to spell with a 'q' in it! and i'm still tired - staying up to watch the dawn is all well and good, but shouldn't you be able to see the sun? and does it always take about three days to recover from the lack of sleep? i wasn't this tired after the eleven hour flight and jet lag combination on the journey out here.

i think tiredness makes me cranky. though maybe that's also something to do with the fact that this is our 'laze on the beach in the sun' bit of the holiday - that we even delayed our arrival into melbourne for - and the sun has been out for about two hours in the past week. we might have to start doing 'interesting' things again if this keeps up.
